Black Box Wines was a contradiction in terms – vintage wine in a box was unheard of in America, even as recently as 2002. Our strategy for aiding broad consumer acceptance was to create a self-assured presence that “fit in” with high-end bottled wine and “stood out” from low-end boxed wine – hence the black-tie trade dress and formal presentation. Half a decade later, Black Box holds the lead in its category and has garnered serious industry accolades: Eight gold medals in competition, plus eight “Best Buys” from Wine Spectator magazine – a distinction for any wine, but unprecedented in bag-in-box.
